Crucial Learning, a world leader in organizational communication and behavior change, today announced the release of the third edition of the New York Times bestselling book, Crucial Accountability: Proven Skills to Build Trust, Address Disappointment, and Get Results (McGraw-Hill, 2026).
With more than a million copies sold, Crucial Accountability provides a proven framework to help leaders improve individual performance constructively and respectfully, strengthening both relationships and results.
“The health of a relationship, team, or organization is a function of the average lag time between identifying a problem and discussing it,” said Joseph Grenny, coauthor of Crucial Accountability. “The longer we wait to address issues, the more expensive the conversation becomes. The skills we teach in Crucial Accountability are grounded in social science and come from 35 years of observation and consulting work with leaders and organizations around the world. We’re excited to take what we’ve found and apply it to relevant, modern-day challenges in this new edition.”
While the skills taught in the book have resonated for decades, accountability continues to be one of the largest gaps in interpersonal communication, affecting relationships and results at home and at work. For example, the proliferation of virtual work and the lack of visibility and personal contact between teammates in today’s workplace have increased the passivity to solve performance problems.
In fact, a recent survey of more than 800 professionals asked people to imagine that they were given a magical free pass that allowed them to say anything they wanted to one person at work with a guarantee they wouldn’t suffer any consequences. When we asked them what they would say and to whom, the responses were telling:
To their boss: “Your feet are where all good ideas die. Yelling at employees is never going to get the outcome you want.”
To their CEO: “You complain that no one tells you anything, but we’re all afraid for our jobs when you get belligerent and lie.”
To their manager: “You are not a work mom. Stop cuddling your work children and hold them accountable!”
When asked them how long they’ve been holding their tongues, 60 percent of respondents said they have been holding in their feelings for a year or more, with 15 percent saying they’ve stayed silent more than five years.
In addition, 3 out of 4 respondents admitted they’ve never tried to directly address the problem with the other person.
“Sentiments like these aren’t just annoyances,” said Justin Hale, coauthor of the new edition. “They’re deeply seated problems that are affecting revenue and results as employees become increasingly disengaged and execution suffers. Accountability isn’t a nice to have. It’s essential to execution discipline and bottom-line success.”
Readers of the new Crucial Accountability will enjoy all the essential accountability skills from previous editions along with new research, case studies, and insights. Updates to the third edition include:
